The Nigerian military has rescued and freed large
number of vulnerable women and elderly locked up by
the retreating Boko Haram terrorists in the liberated
town of Gwoza, Borno State.
Also, men of the 301 Artillery Regiment of the Nigeria
Army on Monday killed three Boko Haram insurgents
and captured one alive in a continued onslaught on the
barbaric Islamic sect in Gombe State.
The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen.
Chris Olukolade, who disclosed that the military had
freed some people held hostage by the sect in a
statement issued yesterday, said the discovery was
made in their ongoing mopping up operations.
“A number of women, the elderly and children who
were locked up by fleeing terrorists in Gwoza have
been freed by troops as cordon and search along with
mopping up operations continued in the town,”
Olukolade said.
According to him, the freed hostages, some of whom
were so weak, are being given medical attention while
others are also receiving necessary care pending the
arrival and activities of aid agencies.
The Defence spokesman added that: “Some of them
are also providing useful information for the
intelligence in aid of troops operations in the area.”
In another development, Olukolade revealed that a
building which has been converted to a bomb making
factory have been discover by troops in the course of
ongoing mopping up operations in Gwoza.
He said the facility which was being used for the
manufacturing of various calibres of Improvised
Explosive Devices (IEDs) was still being carefully
evacuated of dangerous materials.
According to the DDI, massive destruction of
infrastructure and property, like blowing up bridges and
burning houses including Emir’s Palace have also been
noticeable.
He however assured that the “troops are also carefully
removing land mines placed in various parts of the
town.”
In Bama, he added that troops on routine patrol in the
suburbs of the town this morning(yesterday) recovered
a large number of rifles and various arms believed to
have been abandoned by terrorists who fled the area
when troops were advancing to flush them out of the
town recently.
“Bama was liberated by troops on March 16, 2015 and
troops have since been dominating the town with
aggressive patrols to defend it against any further
terrorists activities”, Olukolade said.
Meanwhile, an Army Captain who declined identifying
himself, said the three insurgents who were killed took
the fight to their men at a check point around Dukku,
headquarters of Dukku Local Government Area of
Gombe State.
He said the operation started at about 00.30 hours and
lasted for about one hour leading to the military
breakthrough.
Among the items recovered from them were one army
green Toyota Hilux van, three primed IED, one FM
riffle, three boxes of .50mm live ammunition, 150
rounds of .50mm live ammunition and 70 empty shells
of .50mm ammunition.
Other items were a pair of mobile police uniform with
Clement Ahmadu inscribed on it, two jerry cans of
petrol, tyre patching materials and motor vehicle spare
parts, one empty AK 47 magazine and two empty
boxes of armour.
Also recovered from them were one Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) smart card
reader meant for Nafada Local Government Area, one
empty INEC bag, three bags of rice and one pot of
cooked rice.
The army captain has therefore called on the citizenry
to remain calm and continue to go about their various
activities without fear as they are all out to bring an
end to the insurgency in the country.
The insurgents had on Saturday struck in various parts
of the state, killing seven persons, including two INEC
personnel and a police man on election duty
Five of them were also killed by joint security
operatives in Dukku after the insurgents torched a
police formation in one of the villages
