The remains of a medical doctor, Samuel Okpara, who
was kidnapped last week in Port Harcourt, has been
found by the police in Rivers State.
The discovery of the remains of Okpara came as a
source close to the family of Governor Chibuike
Amaechi’s aide, Mr. Freddy Ndigbara, who was
kidnapped last Saturday, said his abductors have
demanded a ransom of N100 million for his release.
Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)
in the state, Dr. Furo Green, who confirmed the death
of the medical doctor, said his corpse was found
behind the Government Comprehensive Secondary
School (GCSS, Borokiri, Port Harcourt, where it was
dumped by his kidnappers.
The late Okpara was kidnapped from his private
hospital in the Abuloma area of Port Harcourt.
The state chapter of the NMA had earlier in the week
raised the alarm over the incessant abduction of
medical doctors, including the late Okpara, in the state
and threatened to embark on strike if the captives
were not released.
In the case of Ndigbara, his kidnappers have
demanded for a ransom of N100 million before he
could regain his freedom.
A source close to his family told journalists in Port
Harcourt yThursday that the kidnappers had contacted
the family and made the demand.
Ndigbara, a member of staff of the Rivers State
Council of Arts and Culture but on secondment to the
Press Unit of Government House, Port Harcourt, was
kidnapped last Saturday from his home-town, Kaani 1
community in Khana local government area of the
state, while setting up the public address system in
preparation for a campaign rally of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) in the community.
Confirming the development, the state Police Public
Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Mohammad (DSP),
said the remains of Okpara was discovered on
Tuesday behind GCSS, Borokiri, by men of the State
Police Command.
Mohammad also confirmed the rescue of two other
medical doctors who were kidnapped in Port Harcourt
within the same time the late medical doctor was
kidnapped.
He however denied knowledge of any contact between
the kidnappers of Ndigbara and his family with regard
to ransom, but added that men of the command were
currently on the trail of the kidnappers.
