Nyanya : 12 -year - old boy get 12 strokes of the cane for theft, trespass

A Grade 1 Area Court, Nyanya , Abuja, has
ordered that a 12 -year - old boy be given 12
strokes of the cane for theft and trespass .
Judge Hassan Ishaq, who gave the judgement ,
also ordered the teenager ( name withheld ) to
clear the bush around the court premises , after
he pleaded guilty to the two -count charge.
Ishaq advised the teenager to be of good
behaviour and he enjoined his guardian, who was
present in court , to train him properly .
Police prosecutor , Silas Nanpan , had told the
court that a neighbour , Phillip Boniface, reported
the teenager to Nyanyan Police Station on
February 4.
According to Nanpan , Boniface said he was in
his apartment sleeping when the accused
trespassed into his room and stole his Nokia
phone handset valued at N8, 500.
Nanpan said the handset was recovered from
the accused during police investigation.
He said the said offences were contrary to and
punishable under sections 349 and 287 of the
Penal Code Law .
