An Igbo youth group, the Ohanaeze Youth
Movement for Justice and Development
(OYMJD) has declared that the high-level of
hatred demonstrated by the All Progressives
Congress (APC) presidential candidate,
General Muhamadu Buhari, against the Igbos
over the years would cost him the people’s
votes at next month’s presidential election.
In a statement issued Saturday by the group
and signed by Comrades Phillips Igweneme-
President and Uchenna Anihiru-Secretary
respectively, the group said its attention has
been drawn to various posturing by the APC
Presidential candidate which it said, tend to
present him as a friend of the Igbos, adding
however, that “we have allowed the gimmicks
go on before now as we saw his posturing
targeted at winning the hearts of members of
his party before the Presidential primaries.”
The group said it was now constrained to
sound a clear note of warning to Ndigbo
worldwide that the man Buhari has never
been a friend of the Igbos in deed and action
over the years.
“We make bold to say that his decision to
lock up our revered leader, Dr. Alex Ekwueme,
the former Vice President of Nigeria in Kirikiri
maximum Prisons after his 1983 coup, while
keeping the leader of the overthrown
government, Alhaji Shehu Shagari in a cozy
atmosphere called house arrest showcased
the height of his hatred for the Igbos.
“After overthrowing the Shagari government
for alleged corruption, Buhari went ahead to
dignify the leader of the government, Shagari,
with house arrest while our own brother and
leader, Dr. Ekwueme, was kept in the dingy
cells in Kirikiri Maximum prisons, Lagos.
“It is on record that Ekwueme’s only sin for
deserving such maltreatment by Buhari was
because he was Igbo. It is also on record that
Dr. Ekwueme contracted a number of health
challenges that have continued to dog his old
age. The greatest sin a man can commit
against another man is to denigrate his
humanity in the mould of slavery of
yesteryears, subjugate and dehumanise him.
“Why must Ekwueme who never oversaw any
ministry, department or agency of
government be the one to carry the can of
the corruption in Shagari’s government when
his boss was alive and well?” the youths
queried.
Explaining the gains of Igbo under President
Jonathan, the group said the Igbo has
produced the Chief of Army Staff, Secretary to
the Government of the Federation, Deputy
President of Senate, Deputy Speaker of the
House of Representatives, Minister of Finance
and Coordinating Minister of the Economy
among many other top appointments,
concluding that “our stay with Jonathan can
only guarantee us greater things in the
nearest future”.
