Assemblies of God crisis deepens, as church branch splits

If urgent steps are not taken to resolve
the leadership crisis currently rocking
the Assemblies of God Church in
Nigeria, the national body of the church
may soon split into two.
This is even as the crisis has since
begun to take a dangerous dimension,
as some branches of the church have
began to split into two in support of the
faction they prefer.
It would be recalled that since several
months now, the top hierarchy of
Assemblies of God in Nigeria has been
engulfed in leadership crisis, which
resulted in the church now having two
Superintendents ( national leaders) ,
each with his followers and supporters
across the country.
Findings by Daily Independent showed
that the first casualty of the division
was recorded last week at Saminaka
District in Kaduna State where its
branch in Yarkasuwa has since split
into two.
Sources in the district disclosed to Daily
Independent that many more branches of
the church are at the verge of splitting ,
as each member now has a faction he /
she is supporting.
A member of the church in Yarkasuwa ,
who pleaded anonymity while
responding to questions from Daily
Independent , disclosed that trouble
started when the elders of the church
told the pastor in charge of the church
to tell them the faction he belonged to.
When the elders discovered that the
pastor is in support of a faction they
are not comfortable with , they asked
him to leave the church .
This , according to the source, angered
some members of the church , which led
to the splitting of the church into two .
The new church has since bought their
land and has commenced building .
They have , however , made some
modifications on the name of the
Church.
“ We are very worried that this crisis is
taking this ugly dimension. The crisis
that started as a leadership issue that
should be amicably resolved by the
leaders has now been dragged to the
members .”
