EASTER: SHORTAGE OF FUNDS HITS ATMS IN LAGOS, ABUJA, OTHERS

Residents of Abuja, Lagos and other
major cities across the country decried
the unavailability of cash in many banks’
automated teller machines (ATMs) during
this year’s Easter holidays.
The residents, who had stormed banks’
premises as early as 9.00am on
Saturday, bemoaned the stress they had
to go through before withdrawing the
money they needed for the Easter
celebrations.
Most of the ATMs visited last Saturday,
were not dispensing due to lack of cash
while the few that were dispensing had
very long queues of anxious customers
seeking to make withdrawals for the
Easter celebrations.
The federal government declared April 3
and 6, 2015, as public holidays to
commemorate the Good Friday and
Easter celebrations. Banks’ customers
who spoke with LEADERSHIP lamented
banks’ unpreparedness for the holidays.
From all indication, the banks loaded
their ATMs on Thursday, before the
holidays commenced without making
plans on how to reload the machines
during the holidays.
One of them, Joy Okoye, said she that
she had been trying to withdraw some
money since Friday. According to her,
she visited many banks’ ATMs but the
result was the same. She said, “It seems
like the banks were not aware of the
public holidays. How can they leave the
ATMs empty when they know that the
banks will be closed for business?” she
queried.
Another customer, Nathan Uda, who
spoke on Friday, said “The Easter
holidays begin today and if it is like this
now, I wonder what will happen before
Tuesday when workers will resume for
work.”
Uda said that since most bank
withdrawals are now done from ATMs
banks should be more mindful of the
plight of their customers and make
contingency plans for times like this.
LEADERSHIP checks revealed that the
scarcity of funds in ATMs started on
Friday, just one day into the long
weekend. Our correspondent went to as
many as four banks’ ATMs before finding
one that dispensed cash.
The situation got worse on Saturday and
is likely to further worsen today unless
banks come to the rescue.
