A soldier escaped death by a whisker at a
Friday mosque in Nasarawo ward in Yola
after he was mistaken by worshippers to be a
suicide bomber.
An eyewitness who confirmed the incident
said the soldier arrived the mosque during
Friday congregation and refused to show the
content of his bag when he was asked to do
so by security guard cordoning off the
mosque due to insecurity bedevilling the
state.
He said the security guards were not only
checking cars but also the contents of any
suspected item brought to the mosques
during worship.
It has been known facts that bomb attacks
on mosques, churches and markets have
killed hundreds of people in the Northern part
of the country, hence nobody is exempted
from being checked when they arrive the
mosque or a church to curtail the activities
suicide bombers.
Residents said it took the intervention of
vigilantes members who whisked him to
Dubeli Police Station where he was protected
by the police, saying people were
apprehensive because of recent bomb blasts
in some states.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public
Relations Officer of Adamawa State Police
Command, DSP Othman Abubakar, said the
soldier was attending Friday prayer at the
mosque when a false alarm was raised
against him.
He said if not for the timely intervention of
the police, the soldier would have been
lynched, advising the public to report
suspicious persons to the police instead of
taking the law in their hands.
